The compliance complexity of biogas

November 21, 2025

For centuries fuel gas has been a matter of pipes, pressure and people who know their craft. Today the same sector is moving into renewable territory, yet one element has stayed remarkably old fashioned. The paperwork. Before explaining why that is a problem, let us start at the beginning.

What biogas is and how does it differ from biomethane and bio-LNG

Biogas is the raw renewable gas created when organic materials break down without oxygen. Think manure, agricultural residues and other organic waste streams. It contains methane along with carbon dioxide and a mix of other components. Straight from the digester, it is perfectly usable for local combined heat and power units. Biomethane is biogas that has been upgraded. The carbon dioxide and impurities are removed, which results in renewable methane with a quality comparable to natural gas. This enables injection into the gas grid and international trade. Bio-LNG is produced when biomethane is cooled until it becomes liquid. Liquefaction allows storage in tanks and long distance transport. It is valuable for the heavy duty transport market where energy density matters. So the journey goes from biogas to biomethane to bio-LNG. Each step increases market reach but also regulatory scrutiny and certification requirements.

Why trade related documents create daily headaches for compliance teams

Compliance teams in this sector deal with a steady stream trade related documents. A well organized administration is essential as schemes such as ISCC demand traceability from feedstock to final use and every broken chain reinforces risk. Most companies still rely on cloud storage for filing documents and countless spreadsheets for their mass-balance. That setup works until it suddenly does not. One missing attachment, one mistyped unit, one version mismatch, and a compliance team can lose hours recreating a trail that should have taken minutes. In an industry that prides itself on engineering precision, this paper based sprawl feels like something from another era.

The specific challenge of proofs of sustainability for biogas

If there is one document type that keeps compliance teams awake, it is the proof of sustainability for biogas. These records often contain detailed tables at feedstock level. A single PoS may contain 50+ feedstock rows describing quantities, origins, dry matter values, energy contents and greenhouse gas related details. Some PoS documents have feedstock tables stretch across six or more pages. Compliance teams, mostly manually type over all fields of the feedstock details in their excel-based mass-balance. It is slow, vulnerable to mistakes and frankly a test of patience that would make even the most seasoned administrator consider a career change.

How FuelFWD solves this

FuelFWD removes the burden by extracting these tables automatically. Even very long tables are converted into structured fields within seconds. The result drops straight into the mass balance without any manual work. No more manual input, continuous stress, adjusting excel. Just clean verified data ready for audit.

Are you still copying feedstock rows into your mass balance by hand? Stop wasting time. Request a demo and see how FuelFWD extracts the entire table with precision.
